A densimeter is essentially a float with a scale on it. The scale shows how deep it sinks into the liquid and the reading is read from the water line. The result shows the ratio of the density of the liquid to the density of pure water. The density of pure water when measured with a hydrometer is always 1.000. If sugars or other soluble substances (for example, salt) are mixed into the water, we will get a reading higher than 1,000. However, the density of alcohol is generally lower than the density of pure water, so the reading of an alcohol-rich liquid is below 1,000.
